Susan Wojcicki is leaving her position as CEO of YouTube after nine years with immediate effect. She has appointed as her successor Neal Mohan, who has worked as the company's Chief Product Officer for the past seven years.
She stated in a business blog post, "I've decided to stand down from my job as YouTube's CEO to focus on my family, health, and personal projects I'm passionate about." Wojcicki will now serve as a consultant for Google and Alphabet.
In her article, Wojcicki praises Mohan's leadership of YouTube Music, Premium, and Shorts, as well as the successful introduction of YouTube TV. She also mentions Mohan's leadership of the company's Trust and Safety team, which will become increasingly more crucial as "the promises of AI" become a major growth sector.
Throughout Wojcicki's tenure, YouTube has endured intense public scrutiny about its treatment of hate speech, content moderation, and misinformation. When she joined YouTube in 2014, the platform had just surpassed one billion users and "YouTubers" were still seen as curiosities. Currently, YouTube has 2.5 billion viewers worldwide, and many YouTube producers have turned their channels into full-fledged careers.
Wojcicki was one of the earliest employees at Google and, in her own words, "managed marketing, co-created Google Image Search, led Google's first Video and Book search, as well as early parts of AdSense's creation, worked on the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions, and served as SVP of Ads" before becoming YouTube's CEO.
